DisplayLink’s technology allows users to easily add monitors to almost any PC without the need for expensive and power hungry graphics hardware. DisplayLink has many major Partners who have already deployed its USB 2.0 graphics technology and the growing number has led the company to further enhance how it supports its partners.

Endurance has been working with DisplayLink on developments designed to reduce integration effort, improve implementation efficiency and reduce deployment time for Partners, with a specific focus on embedded products. The DisplayLink Embedded Partner Platform (EPP) was developed to provide reference driver source code to DisplayLink (DL) customers, suitable for building primarily on flavours of Linux, although Windows, Mac OS, UNIX and other ports are possible.

Recently it has become clear that there would be great value in producing a simplified version of the DisplayLink library which can be released  under the GNU Lesser General Public License v2 (LGPL). This software can be used to drive one or more DisplayLink devices attached via USB to a Linux machine. Additionally, for example, it could be used to provide removable displays on headless servers, or add additional displays to Linux devices without requiring any graphics cards. The released software enables DisplayLink customers to refine and modify it as they see fit in order to tailor it to their application. It is also specifically designed for Linux (and related) operating systems.

As part of this release DisplayLink will make available, through an number of third parties, an OSI-compliant, stripped-down version of the core EPP functionality, initially for Linux. The release is targeted at anyone who wants to develop custom Linux applications interfacing with DisplayLink hardware and parties who want to trial the DisplayLink hardware. Endurance will provide qualified development, integration and testing services to any organisation requiring expert advice.
Endurance will also supply a selection of reference source code examples giving real world reference for how to drive the DisplayLink library, including:
·         loading and rendering PNG images (and simple animations)
·         loading and rendering JPEGs - basic slideshow
·         driving multiple displays to give a single ‘wide’ display surface
·         storing and switching between multiple screen banks
·         slideshow for embedded device (e.g. ADSL router running OpenWRT)

DisplayLink’s Vice President of Strategic Engineering Adrian van den Heever said “We are very pleased with the role Endurance has performed in the creation of an embedded technology deployment mechanism for our Partners. Endurance provided a knowledgable, skilled and balanced approach to all phases of the work allowing DisplayLink to simply describe what was needed. I have no hesitation in recommending Endurance’s professional services capability to our partners to provide embedded development support and help our Partners work out the best way to deploy our Technology.”

Endurance Managing Director Andrew Moyler added, “as original authors of the partner programme software we are able to provide expert design and implementation services to any users wishing to take advantage of the benefits of the DisplayLink platform. Our expertise with writing robust, well-engineered, compact and efficient embedded code will help Partners to achieve a quality market deliverable in the shortest possible time.

About DisplayLink
DisplayLink Corp. (www.displaylink.com) is a chip and software company that enables easy connectivity between computers and displays over standard interfaces like USB, Wireless USB, and Ethernet. Its innovations make it easy to incrementally expand the desktop visual workspace at significantly lower cost and power than traditional solutions. DisplayLink technology can transmit graphically rich content between a single device and multiple displays over relatively low-speed busses and networks. Leading global manufacturers have integrated DisplayLink USB graphics – a 2008 PC Magazine Technical Excellence Award winner - into an array of PC accessories including monitors, docking stations, display adapters and projectors.
